SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County deputy is in serious condition after he was stabbed in the neck by a suspect who attacked him with a knife just before midnight Wednesday night.

Deputies were called to the 21000 block of Pearl Harvest for a 911 call reporting a family violence assault between a father and son. According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the dispute escalated when Gary Hamre assaulted his father.

When the deputy arrived he attempted to talk to Hamre. A struggle ensued as Hamre pushed the deputy causing them both to fall to the ground.  

During the struggle, Hamre stabbed the deputy in the neck and cut his head. The deputy is being treated at University Hospital.

The suspect was arrested and also transported to University Hospital to treat his injuries from the struggle to detain him. The suspect will face charges for attempted capital murder.

Hamre is charged wil attempted capital murder of a police officer, continued violence against family and resisting arrest. 

Neighbors said Hamre threatens kids in the neighborhood, drinks heavily and brags about having an arsenal of weapons in his home.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
