In a sure sign that the holiday season is over, needles are falling off Christmas trees throughout the city, and New Yorkers took part in the annual MulchFest.

New Yorkers were able to recycle their trees at dozens of chipping locations around the five boroughs this weekend.

Those who handed in a tree could take home a bag of mulch for their garden or potted plants.

"We're recycling the trees that otherwise would end up in the waste stream, and then those chips that are made from the trees can be used throughout city parks and gardens," said John Kilcullen, the director of Conference House Park for Staten Island. "So it's kind of going full circle with the tree."

If you could not make it out to the event, the city sanitation department continues its curbside collection through Jan. 13.
