A street was renamed for the iconic Ms. magazine Wednesday. NY1's Clodagh McGowan was there for the ceremony and filed the following report.

The corner of E. 32nd Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan is now known as Ms. Magazine Way, the name of the feminist magazine founded by Gloria Steinem in 1971.

Ms. is considered groundbreaking for covering issues that have been under-reported or ignored by other media, from abortion and sexual assault to workplace inequality.

"There are so many of our cover stories that were about issues that up to then didn't have names," Steinem said.

City Councilwoman Rosie Mendez introduced the legislation to co-name the street. She says that with so many allegations emerging of prominent men engaging in sexual harassment and assault, Ms. Magazine's message is especially resonant today.

"As much as things change and they have, there's some things that don't change. And it's important to talk about it, it's important to read about it. It's important to know you're not alone," Mendez said.

The new focus on sexual harassment has, ironically, embroiled Steinem - an icon of the feminist movement - in controversy. Critics seizing on an op-ed she wrote for the New York Times in 1998 as then President Bill Clinton was battered by sexual harassment allegations.

"Even if the allegations are true, the President is not guilty of sexual harassment. He is accused of having made a gross, dumb, and reckless pass at a supporter during a low point in her life. She pushed him away...and it never happened again. In other words, President Clinton took ‘no’ for an answer.”

On Wednesday, Steinem says she stands by what she wrote.

Gloria Steinem: No if you actually read...have you read it?

Reporter: I have.

Gloria Steinem: Okay. Well then you can see that I was suggesting that he needed mental health treatment. So, no. The point is now the same as it was then.

Ms., of course, is covering the sexual harassment debate with headlines such as "Feminists Took to the Streets in Los Angeles to Fight Sexual Harassment and Abuse".

Ms. Magazine is celebrating its 45th Anniversary as a stand alone publication this year. It was first printed as an insert in New York magazine in 1971.

At the time, New York Magazine's office was on E. 32nd Street, just steps from where the sign now stands.
