The fire department is investigating what started a five-alarm blaze Wednesday in Greenwich Village that required hundreds of firefighters to put under control.

The FDNY said they put the fire under control around 9:15 p.m.

Officials said the fire broke out around 5:45 p.m. in a six-story building with more than 200 apartments at 60 East Ninth Street.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said officials are investigating if the fire started in a deli on the ground floor of the building.

Nigro said the fire quickly spread to the cockloft of the building.

He said the building has seven apartments per floor, and that all apartments below the top floor have significant damage.

Fire department officials said five firefighters suffered minor injuries. No civilians were injured.

MTA officials said R and W trains are currently skipping the 8th Street-NYU stop.
