Hundreds of New Yorkers walked across the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday to raise awareness of dating violence.

The Healing Center organized the sixth annual "Teen Dating Violence Awareness Walk-a-Thon."

A rally was also held in downtown Brooklyn, which featured speakers who shared their experiences.

Organizers said the best way to deal with the problem is for people to speak up.

"Domestic violence still lives in the shadows of our society," said Antonia Clemente, the executive director and founder of the Healing Center. "And it's ugly, and people don't like to talk about the ugliness, but yet, in our society, every nine seconds in the United States, a woman is a victim of domestic violence.

"So we're here to say that we can stop domestic violence in our lifetime, but we need to bring awareness and we need to bring education."

1 in 3 teens suffer some kind of abuse in their romantic relationships, according to a study in the American Journal of Public Health.
