The man who allegedly stole $1.6 million worth of gold flakes is under arrest.

Police say 53-year-old Julio Nivelo, who is also known as David Vargas, was arrested in Ecuador by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

Investigators initially believed Nivelo was in Los Angeles.

Back on September 29, they say Nivelo approached an armored truck on West 48th Street and Fifth Avenue in Midtown around 4:30 p.m.

Surveillance cameras caught him taking a pail from the parked truck.

Investigators say the pail contained 86 pounds of gold flakes.
