NEW YORK - A gala was held in Manhattan Wednesday night to honor the late tennis champion Arthur Ashe and raise awareness of HIV prevention.

The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health held its 22nd Annual Black Tie & Sneakers Gala in Midtown.

It focuses on providing HIV prevention training, free health screenings, and science education in underserved parts of Brooklyn.

Ashe died of AIDS in 1993 after contracting HIV through a blood transfusion.

NY1 anchor Cheryl Wills was one of the gala’s hosts.

“Arthur Ashe did not run away. Whatever the challenge and whatever hurdle was in front of him he faced it head on. That’s why I’m here tonight. Because his legacy must be preserved and we cannot forget what he did," Wills said.
