NEW YORK - Amsterdam Avenue is back open as crews continue working to repair a broken water main that caused quite a mess Monday night on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

The main broke around 9 p.m. at West 89th Street and Amsterdam Avenue and quickly flooded nearby streets.

The break also caused a giant sinkhole to open up underneath a parked BMW.

Con-Ed says there was no damage to the main gas line as firefighters hoisted the car out of the sinkhole Tuesday morning.

"It was just gushing all the way up. And the alarm lights were going on and off on the car. And then all of a sudden, it started going down a little bit, which was kind of scary," said one neighborhood resident.

"I’m standing here now waiting for them to turn the water back on the hydrants, so we can get some water for sanitary uses, which makes me feel like I’m in a third world country," said another.

The fire department says some basements in the area flooded with at least five feet of water.

One apartment building remained without water Tuesday morning.

While Amsterdam Avenue is now reopen, the MTA is still rerouting all M7, M11, and M86 buses.
