A structure symbolizing hope in the city after the September 11th attacks is heading home.

The Port Authority Board approved plans Thursday to relocate the Koenig Sphere from Battery Park back to the World Trade Center site.

The 25-foot bronze globe originally stood between the Twin Towers. It was pulled from the wreckage and later installed in Battery Park.

"The sphere was severely damaged on 9/11 but remains substantially intact amid the devastation of that day," Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye said.

"And it served for many as a powerful symbol or resiliency and strength in the days that followed, as well as a monument to the victims and heroes that lost their lives that day," Foye continued.

The Koenig Sphere is set to grace the World Trade Center site's recently-opened Liberty Park.

The structure is named after German artist Fritz Koenig.
