Students at Barnard College got a blast from the past Wednesday as a time capsule from 1959 was opened on campus.

Among its contents were copies of the school newspaper, a course catalog, a student guidebook and old photos of Barnard in the 1890s.

For the current students and administration, it's like a part of the school's legend brought to life.

"We had heard rumors that a time capsule was buried in the cornerstone and so the day when the workers actually found the time capsule, it was kind of awesome," said Barnard College President Debora Spar.

"It's all about Barnard then, and we were very obviously, very different institution, but it was the same values and principles," said Barnard College Class of 1959 President Roz Paaswell.

The capsule's opening was part of the formal announcement of a new $400 million fundraising campaign.

They're raising money in part for the construction of a new teaching and learning center on the site of the old library.

That's where construction workers unearthed the old time capsule earlier this year.

School officials are planning to bury a new one in 2018, when the new facility opens.
