The city fire department swore in two boys under the age of five — who are battling cancer — as honorary firefighters Tuesday, the fire department said.

River Laurence, 4, from Texas, and Trucker Dukes, 3, from Hawaii, recently came to Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to battle stage-4 brain cancer.

They met some city firefighters in the course of treatment, and became fast friends.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro swore in the two boys as honorary New York City firefighters. Trucker's father, Joshua, is a firefighter at home.

"I don't think we would have made it this far without the love and support and prayers from everybody. It's been incredible," Joshua Dukes said. "Even in our fire department, in the first six months, I had guys showing up to work my shifts for me because we were in the hospital."

"They've taken us in," said Joscelyn Laurence, River's mother. "They've adopted Trucker, and the same with River. We've made friends here for life."

The boys are battling neuroblastoma. There are around one thousand news cases of the sometimes-fatal childhood cancer each year in the United States.

About half of the children with aggressive neuroblastoma die from the disease.
