One person is dead and another is recovering after a car crash in Manhattan early Tuesday morning, according to the city police department.

Police said 32-year-old Shiva Sharma of Long Island drove up 6th Avenue just after 3:40 a.m., when the car slammed into a fire hydrant near 54th Street.

The passenger in the car, Juan Avila, 33, was taken to Mount Sinai West Roosevelt, where he was pronounced dead, according to the police report.

Sharma was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. He is being charged with vehicular manslaughter.

There is no word yet on what caused the crash as the investigation continues.
