Local officials and veterans gathered at Riverside Park on the Upper West Side to pay respects on Memorial Day.

Officials laid wreaths at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the park.

This year's event paid special tribute to Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz on the 50th anniversary of his death.

Nimitz commanded the Pacific Fleet during World War II.

Those who came out spoke of the site's importance.

"It's an honor to be here, honoring those who fell down and never came back from the war,"  said one veteran at the ceremony.

"This is the only place where people can go in this neighborhood and say we want to remember the fallen soldiers and sailors who served our country,"

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument has stood at Riverside Park since 1920.
