With temperatures expected to plunge into the single digits this weekend, firefighters are doing their part to help keep kids warm.

The Uniformed Fire Officers Association teamed up with the non-profit organization "Operation Warm" to hand out hundreds of new winter coats to students at P.S. 115 in Washington Heights on Thursday.

"We were looking for schools where they had a number of children who were homeless, and so this school unfortunately has a number of children who are without shelter," Public Advocate Letitia James said at P.S. 115. "And so, we wanted to provide for them."

"Operation Warm" has helped hand out winter gear to more than two million kids across the country.

This is the second straight year the Uniformed Fire Officers Association has taken part in the coat drive.
