A man is in critical condition after he was hit by a bus in Manhattan Friday.

Police say the 50-year-old man was crossing Sixth Avenue at West Fourth Street when he was hit by a tour bus making a left from Fourth Street.

The incident happened just before 2 p.m. Friday.

"I wanted to be able to help him. I wanted to do what I could have done. I went to him, I held his hand, I asked him his name and I also just told him to breathe, so he could take his mind off of what happened or what was happening at the time," said one perosn at the scene.

"Somebody was shouting on the top of the bus. They shout like, 'Stop, stop.' The driver stopped the bus, and after that happened, I went there, I saw someone was, the bus struck somebody and he was in the middle of the bus," said another.

The bus driver stayed on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
