A jury awarded nearly $50 million to the families of two men killed in a crane collapse in Manhattan seven years ago.

In 2008, construction workers Ramadan Kurtaj and Donald Leo were killed when parts of a massive crane snapped off and fell on the Upper East Side.

On Thursday, a jury ruled that the crane's owner, James Lomma, and his company must pay $32 million to Kurtaj's family and nearly $16 million to Leo's.

The families' attorneys say Lomma was responsible because he allowed subpar repairs to the crane.

Lomma was acquitted of manslaughter and other criminal charges in 2012.

Kurtaj's attorney says this was the longest jury trial in the history of the city.
