Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday officiated a same-sex wedding ceremony for the first time since being granted the authority to do so in the last round of legislative negotiations.

The ceremony, which wed David Contreras Turley and Peter Thiede, was held outside of the historic Stonewall Inn.

Until recently, one had to become an ordained minister in NYS in order to perform the ceremony.

During the service, Cuomo talked about the meaning of the word "equality."

"Marriage is an individual choice. I'm not married. Equality is not a choice. Equality is a promise," he said.

The Stonewall Inn was designated a landmark last week, the first one in the city tied to the gay rights movement.
