Police are investigating an attack on a gay couple inside a Manhattan restaurant earlier this week as a possible hate crime.

The assault was caught on video.

The attack happened Tuesday night at Dallas BBQ on Eighth Avenue in Chelsea.

Police say Jonathan Snipes, 32, got into a dispute with a man sitting nearby and the man started beating Snipes.

Investigators say Ethan York-Adams, 25, tried to intervene.

The clip shows the attacker hitting York-Adams with a chair.

Witnesses say the attacker also made anti-gay remarks.

City Councilman Corey Johnson, who represents the area, says these kinds of attacks have to stop.

"Watching the video was shocking, appalling, and literally made me sick to my stomach. It shows that anti-LGBT hate violence is still alive in our city. Just because marriage equality has been won, it doesn't mean the battle is over," Johnson said.

The victims suffered cuts and bruises and were treated on the scene.

Police are now looking for the man who threw the chair.

He is said to be about 6'4" tall and around 35-years-old.
