The city broke ground Wednesday on a Hurricane Sandy reconstruction project on Manhattan's West Side.

The 79th Street Boat Basin's "A-dock" was already deteriorating before the storm and was destroyed during it.

The dock was originally built back in the '30s and was made mostly out of wood. It will now be replaced by concrete and steel.

City officials say "A-Dock" was the marina's most heavily-used pier.

"If you take a look at the dock right now, part of it is actually submerged underwater. It's severely damaged, and right now, it's unusable," said Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver. "We want to bring it back into a state of good repair so the public can use it."

"It's going to be built with a lot less wood and a lot more metal. It's going to be built mush stronger," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, whose district covers parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. "So hopefully, it will withstand future storms."

The nearly $8 million project is being funded by FEMA and the mayor's office.

Construction is expected to be completed by early next year.
