Police say a man wanted for robbery was shot dead by police Saturday in Manhattan.

Officials say two detectives from the 26 precinct went to 538 East 6th Street Saturday just before 2 p.m. with the intention of arresting a 24-year-old man wanted for a robbery allegedly committed last Thursday.

The man allegedly fled through the fire escape. Officials say a violent struggle then ensued in the first floor hallway. The suspect allegedly got hold of one of the officer's radios and bashed the officer in the head with it. That's when the detective opened fire, firing one fatal shot to the suspect.

Officials say the suspect was taken to Beth Israel Hospital with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead.

The two detectives were taken to Bellevue Hospital, both with bruising and lacerations to the head and one with a dislocated shoulder.

They are expected to be ok.

Saturday night a small group of protesters gathered nearby on Avenue A, apparently drawn by the news of a police involved shooting, though no one said they knew the suspect or the circumstances.
