One of the city's most famous eateries has reportedly been shut down after an illegal gas hook-up was discovered.

The Daily News reports that Carnegie Deli was issued a stop work order yesterday by building inspectors who spotted the hookup in the deli's basement.

Officials say that the owners were cited for working without a permit and illegal gas connection to Carnegie Deli.

Sources tell the paper that the hookup tampered with the meter and allowed the owners to lower their bills.

City officials and Con Edison have been conducting sweeps looking for illegal gas hookups in response to last month's deadly explosion in the East Village.
