Summer is on its way, and so is Citi Bike's busiest season, but the program's operator says customers can expect an all-round smoother ride by then.

A company called Motivate says the nation's biggest bike sharking system is undergoing a major overhaul.

That includes a sweeping software update, to make bikes easier to find and then use, as well as improvements to the stations and, of course, the bikes themselves.

"Over the winter we've been overhauling all our bikes, we have 6,000 of them, and we've completed 4,200 overhauls, by this point right now. We'll finish the rest before the summer, but that's not good enough.  What you'll also see from us, is an effort to be able to maintain all those bikes, in tip-top working condition," says Motivate CEO Jay Walder.

The upgrades also come ahead of a major expansion of the program.

Motivate says it expects to double the amount of docking stations and bikes in the city by 2017.
