A man is dead after an apartment fire in Union Square.

While responding to the early-morning blaze, firefighters say they discovered 59-year-old Ed Albers lying unconscious by his front door.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A neighbor said Albers was a painter, and will be missed.

"He was a good guy. He was quiet. He walked his German Shepherd. Captain was his name, and I guess we will all miss him," his neighbor, William Mandeville, said.

Investigators say the fire was caused by an extension cord.
