One of the world's most coveted guitars has been sold at auction.

The original Les Paul 1954 Black Custom, also known as "Black Beauty," was sold by Guernsey's auctions in Manhattan Thursday for more than $335,000 to an anonymous bidder.

The six string guitar features gold-plated hardware and was designed by the legendary guitarist himself.

A jazz, country, and blues artist, Paul made constant modifications to the instrument in pursuit of the perfect sound.

Black Beauty's design set the standard for the Les Paul line of Gibson guitars that would become popular with musicians all over the world.

Les Paul died in 2009.
