Lunar New Year celebrations are underway around the world and here in the city.

Children and teens of the National Dance Institute's Celebration Team marked the occasion with a performance at the New York-Historical Society.

The young participants performed both traditional and modern dances featuring choreography influenced heavily by Chinese culture.

"For the last three years, we've had a partnership with the children's palace in Shanghai, and children from the institute had the opportunity to travel to Shanghai and dance and work with children and artists there in Shanghai," said Ellen Weinstein of the National Dance Institute. "In addition to that, we've had the great opportunity to host here in New York choreographers and teachers from the children's palace who worked with our children here on their traditional folk dances, and that's what we're performing this afternoon."

Depending on your interpretation of the traditional Chinese zodiac, it's the year of the goat, sheep, or ram.

Lunar New Year observances can stretch for up to two weeks or more.

The National Dance Institute will have another show to celebrate the Lunar New Year with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center next Tuesday.
