A man is in critical but stable condition after being shot by police Monday night on the Lower East Side.

Authorities say he was wounded after officers responded to a call for a dispute inside an apartment at the Vladeck Houses just before midnight.

The NYPD Emergency Service Unit forced their way into the apartment after hearing a woman scream, "He's stabbing me."

Police say officers initially used a taser to stop the 37-year-old man, but when that didn't work one officer fired five shots, striking the man in the chest.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

A knife was recovered at the scene.

Charges are pending.
