The owner of a construction company is dead after falling down an elevator shaft in Manhattan.

It happened at a building under construction on 70th Street between Broadway and Columbus Avenue.

Police say 61-year-old Frank Dragotta was on site awaiting a meeting and leaned over to look toward the basement when he thought he heard people arriving.

At that point, surveillance video shows Dragotta missing the guard rail he was reaching for and falling into the shaft.

Construction at the site is being halted, and a violation for failure to safeguard the site was issued.
