The Red Cross is assisting more than two dozen people displaced by a three-alarm fire.

The FDNY says the flames broke out on the fifth floor of this building in Washington Heights around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters say it took more than an hour for them to get it under control.

The Buildings Department says the entire structure is uninhabitable.

One resident described the scene.

"All my lights started going out and then when I went to my son's room, I saw firecrackers in between the walls. So, I got my kids and I dressed them and I grabbed my dog and ran out. As I was running out, I saw one of the neighbors and I told her something is wrong in my apartment. And then when we looked through the hallway, there was fires coming out," she said.

The city's Office of Emergency Management and the MTA provided a bus for displaced residents to temporarily warm up in.

The Red Cross is now providing them with food and shelter.
