ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police say the driver who ran from the scene of a fatal crash on Lake Avenue Saturday afternoon turned out to be the wife of the man who died.

RPD officials announced the arrest of 46-year-old Malachia Wallace-Johnson. She's charged with aggravated unlicensed operation and driving without an interlock device. Those charges could be upgraded.

Police say Johnson was behind the wheel of a car that collided with a Jeep in the intersection of Lake and Phelps Avenues.

50-year-old Maurice Johnson was a passenger in her car and had to be freed from the wreckage. He died a short time later at Strong Hospital.

Police say in addition to having her license revoked for a previous DWI conviction, Malachia Johnson has 21 suspensions on her license.

She's being held without bail and is due in court next week. Her husband's funeral is set for Thursday.
