ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A guilty plea came Friday in the case of a Rochester father who admitted he was in possession of an illegal handgun that his young son used to to accidentally shoot himself in the head.

Charles Phillips, 36, pleaded guilty Friday morning to a charge of criminal possession of a weapon.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office says the previously convicted felon left the loaded weapon unattended and that's when his 2-year-old son, Zayden grabbed it and pulled the trigger.

Zayden died several days later at Strong Memorial Hospital. The incident happened October 20th at a home on Walnut Street.

Phillips was originally indicted on a manslaughter charge.

As part of the plea, he'll serve 12 years in prison with 5 years post release supervision.

He'll be sentenced March 30th.
