Adam Balkin highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the weekly segment "App Wrap."

YouTube Kids

Most parents know that today, all a young child needs is a few unsupervised minutes on YouTube to be suddenly learning some very adult, perhaps very inappropriate lessons from lord knows who or where. That no longer has to be a concern though, thanks to the new YouTube Kids app. It basically rounds up much of the child-friendly content on YouTube and serves it up in a nice, easy to find way. There are four categories: Shows, Music, Learning, and then an Explore tab. It is set up for the youngest children to get started with preschool level content up top, but children who are old enough to spell can also do searches for what they would like to watch. To make sure kids don’t fall down a YouTube “hole," so to speak, like adults often do, parents can set time limits within the app. YouTube Kids is a free app for iOS and Android devices.

Vine Kids

Six-second video sharing app Vine has also released a child-friendly app.  Just like the YouTube Kids app, it features only Vines that are appropriate for young ones. For the most part, they’re only absolutely adorable Vines. Adults who like to start the day with heartwarming scenes might want to download this one as well. The Vines are housed inside virtual characters, which kids can poke to add sound effects to what they are watching. They then simply slide right or left to cue up another. Vine Kids is also free, though right now, just for iOS devices.
