The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is getting a massive facelift.

The city's Transportation Department says it's pumping $1.7 billion into repairing part of the highway.

A one-and-a-half mile stretch in Brooklyn, between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street is slated to get the upgrades.

Key parts include the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, a walkway with views of Manhattan, along with the two levels of traffic below — that go to Queens and Staten Island.

The BQE spans nearly 12 miles through Queens and Brooklyn.

But with about 140,000 vehicles commuting on the highway every day, the DOT commissioner says that's double what it's meant to handle.

"A huge, challenging, almost once in a lifetime project. It'll be the biggest that New York City DOT has ever undertaken. I wish we didn't have to repair it, but now it's way past its useful life."

The DOT says it plans to keep lanes open during construction, which is expected to start in two years.

The city says it will take about 5 years to finish the project.
