What You Need To Know

  • Police said 43-year-old Tommy Bailey was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital after a man slashed his neck Friday night on a southbound L train in Brooklyn

  • No arrests have been made as police continue their investigation, the NYPD said

  • According to police, Bailey and another man had been arguing but it is not clear what the argument was about

For his own safety, Juan Nunez of East New York says the only time he boards the L train at Atlantic Avenue is during daylight hours.

“I don’t even want to come here at night,” Nunez said. “Luckily, I wasn’t on the train. I could have been the one who got stabbed in the neck!”

He said while the incident is disturbing, it does not come as a surprise.

“There’s no cameras in the station,” Nunez said. “There’s not a lot of security in the station. Nobody’s really on the train watching what’s going on!”

In a statement to NY1, the MTA said it had already identified dozens of cameras that might help the NYPD with their investigation.

Commuters, like Unique Davis, ride the L train nearly every day to get to work. While she never feels 100% safe riding the train, she said continues to ride at all hours of the night because it’s the most practical and economical way to get around.

“You just never know,” Davis said. “It could be your last day talking to your loved one, and it’s scary. It’s very scary out here. It’s sad.”

The deadly slashing late Friday night continues the troubling uptick in crime affecting the subway system.

The latest numbers from the NYPD show transit crime citywide is up with over 43% compared to last year.

Police described the person who they are looking for as a man who is about 5-foot-9 with gold teeth.

According to the NYPD, he was wearing a gray sweatshirt.

No arrests have been made as police continue their investigation, the NYPD said.
