WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Thursday officially called off the scheduled meeting between him and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

In a letter addressed to Kim, President Trump says he decided to cancel the summit due to the "tremendous anger and open hostility'' in a recent statement from North Korea.

The highly anticipated summit was planned for to take place on June 12 in Singapore.

Trump also tells Kim that while North Korea threatens to use nuclear weapons, "ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.''

However, President Trump also thanked Kim Jong Un for the recent release of several Americans who had been held prisoner in North Korea.

President Trump says he would be open to dialogue again in the future.
