Shaun Daugherty says being abused as a child by his teacher and coach made it painful for him to read a book, or pick up a guitar, because of the memories.

He joined several survivors of childhood sexual assault in a campaign to inform local communities about the Child Victims Act, and what they say is obstruction by certain members of the State Senate.

They spoke to media at a local little league baseball park in the Town of Wallkill because they say that many kids are abused by people they trust, like coaches. And, they're speaking out against Senator John Bonacic (R- Mount Hope), who they allege has blocked the bill from coming to a vote.

"That bill should go to the floor for a vote," says Daugherty. "And as an American veteran, I'm disgusted by this process. Absolutely disgusted that these victims, my fellow survivors, sit and cry and wait in angst."

There was hope that it might be passed along with the state budget, but in a comment to Spectrum News, Sen. Bonacic said that "it appears the Child Victims Act would not be included" in the budget. He says the issue will continue to be discussed in the remainder of the legislative session.
