GALVESTON, Texas — Port officials say that dilapidated facilities are the most pressing threat to Galveston's public docks and could require as much as $250 million to fix.

The Galveston County Daily News reports that some port tenants want to increase operations, but the cash-strapped docks have to address ongoing infrastructure problems before any expansion.

Galveston Port Director Rodger Rees says the island is looking at about $250 million to fix the docks. But records show the port is projected to bring in only about $250,000 in net income this year.

Galveston has long operated as Texas' only cruise port, but the city is seeing efforts among other ports in the state to enter the cruise business. Port officials say they're not too concerned about the possibility of cutting into Galveston's profits.
