Democratic lawmakers are expected to release details of a proposal to change the state's bail system later today.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has unveiled his own plan to stop requiring criminal defendants from paying bail in misdemeanor and non-violent felony cases.

Supporters say cash bail is unfair — allowing defendants with financial resources to go free, while those without money have to wait for a trial.

Instead, Cuomo is proposing to release defendants if they agree to check in with officials.
