ABILENE, Texas — Officials say a single-engine private plane has made a crash landing in a West Texas field shortly after takeoff on a flight to New Mexico.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the pilot reported engine trouble after takeoff Monday from Abilene Regional Airport and was trying to land at nearby Dyess Air Force Base.

Taylor County Sheriff's Sgt. Cliff Griffin says the pilot wasn't hurt in the crash landing a mile west of Dyess. Griffin says the plane was bound for Ruidoso, New Mexico.

The Beechcraft A-36 ended up on its belly.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration didn't immediately return a message Monday due to the U.S. government shutdown.
