BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A new initiative is looking to curb Broome County's unemployment numbers.

The program, called 'SkillUp!,' combines online and in-person training geared toward specific high-demand employers in the region. A number of sites in the county offer classes throughout the day focused on boosting employment skills in various fields.

Right now, there are 5,800 unemployed citizens in Broome County, with more than 2,500 job openings. SkillUp! is also geared toward students who either dropped out of school or can't afford continued education.

"SkillUp will help out students to have that component to not only have a diploma but then to add to it job skills, training, to make them better employees," said Binghamton City School District Adult Education Program Manager Oral Marriott.

Anyone interested in joining the program can sign up at broome.skillupamerica.org, or visit Broome-Tioga Workforce Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
