AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin police officers showed off their hoops skills with some North Austin kids.

The Police Activities League, or PAL, hosted a basketball clinic at Padron Elementary on Tuesday. The free event gives young boys in grades three through five the chance to learn new skills on the court.

Leaders said the event also helps them create positive relationships with officers.

"We’re not the best basketball coaches but we’re still out here and trying to support them. So they’re getting that respect from us and having an opportunity to have a fun time with police officers and get a different perspective of us as people,” said Officer Jeremy Bohannon, of the Austin Police Department.

The Police Activities League of Austin is a nonprofit organization. Its mission is to keep kids out of jail
