BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Broome County is hoping 2018 is a turning point in the fight against drugs.

Last year, crime dropped 16 percent, moving Broome County out of the number one spot in the state's crime index. Drug overdose deaths dropped slightly as well from 76 in 2016.

The amount of people in drug court, though, doubled. Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell says while the county is moving in the right direction, the battle is far from over.

Cornwell also has high hopes for the new drug treatment center at the former Broome Developmental Center. He says the next step will be getting addicts who have detoxed into further treatment.
