An update on a story NY1 was the first to report this summer.

Punishment has been handed down in the case of a Bronx girl who was severely burned by another girl.

Jamoneisha Merritt, seen above, had boiling water tossed on her while staying overnight at a friend's house back in August with several other girls.

Her mother said it was a case of bullying and what's called the "hot water challenge," which is when people throw boiling water on others.

Now, NY1 has found out that the 12-year-old who threw the scalding water has been sentenced to 18 months probation by family court.

But Jamoneisha's mother and their lawyer are disappointed in the outcome of the case.

"It doesn't make sense that all of the girls were not punished because they were involved in some way," said Paul Prestia, Jamoneisha's lawyer.

Prestia and Jamoneisha's mother also think the mother who was watching the girls should have been charged.

Jamoneisha, who is 12 years old now, has made a miraculous recovery.

In October, the New York City Fire Department honored her for her courage and spirit to survive.

Jamoneisha has expressed some interest in becoming a firefighter, but her true love is dancing like many kids her age.
