The investigation continues this morning after police shoot a man after a confrontation in Upper Manhattan.

It happened Sunday at about 5:30 p.m. on West 143rd Street between Riverside Drive and Broadway in Hamilton Heights.

Police say they received a call about an emotionally disturbed man who tried to commit suicide.

They say when officers arrived to the sixth floor apartment they discovered a man armed with two knives.

When police ordered him to drop them, he allegedly refused and made his way toward them.

"One police officer discharged one round, striking the male in the left leg," said NYPD Assistant Chief Rodney Harrison. "The police officers immediately began performing first aid and called for an ambulance after the armed male was shot. The suspect was transported to St. Luke's Hospital."

Police say they recovered two knives at the scene.

Two officers were also taken to the hospital for evaluation.
