Police Commissioner James O'Neill says the officer involved in the shooting death of an emotionally disturbed man did not receive training on how to handle emotionally disturbed people.

Officer Miguel Gonzalez was one of four officers responding to a call when police say 32-year old Dwayne Jeune attacked them with a knife.

Police say Jeune was tazed by one officer, but when that didn't stop him Gonzalez fired five rounds and killed him.

Gonzalez was the only officer of those four who did not receive training.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill says the officer had a similar encounter last year.

"Officer Gonalez was involved in a prior shooting where someone called 911 on themselves, stating that they had a gun and a knife," O'Neill said. "That didn't come over as a ,Terry correct me if I'm wrong, it didn't come over as an emotionally disturbed person. We see that shooting as within guidelines."

Commissioner O'Neill says the NYPD will finish their investigation of Officer Gonzalez soon.

They will also continue to train officers to handle emotionally disturbed individuals.
