Sources tell NY1 that the driver of a runaway MTA bus that went speeding backwards down a Brooklyn street early Wednesday morning had only been the job for less than one week.

The MTA says the driver of the Q58 bus did not properly apply the brake, causing it to roll for several blocks down Palmetto Street in Bushwick around 12:45 a.m.

The bus eventually crashed into St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The church's van was one of five vehicles damaged by the bus.

"They said I don't know, something with the brake. I don't know really what happened with the bus, but my van is damaged completely," said one witness.

No one was onboard at the time.

A pedestrian was injured and was taken to Wyckoff Hospital for treatment.

In response to the incident, a TWU spokesperson said, "We are grateful no one was seriously hurt. This is a very young bus operator in her early 20s who was on the job only three days. She is obviously very, very upset and we're going to assist her."
