Six people are facing charges, accused of running a prescription drug ring that sold tens of thousands of dollars worth of opioid painkillers in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

The city's special narcotics prosecutor says they ran the ring from August through October of last year.

Authorities say over the course of three months, the group filled prescriptions at pharmacies for nearly 3,000 oxycodone pills, then sold them on the black market.

They have been indicted on conspiracy and criminal sale of a controlled substance charges.

The city has been trying to tackle a record number of heroin and opioid overdose deaths.

More than 1,300 people died from overdoses across the five boroughs last year.
