NYPD Officer Peter Liang, who is charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the death of Akai Gurley, took the stand in his own defense Monday.

Closing arguments in the case are set for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, family and friends of Gurley rallied outside the courthouse after the proceedings Monday.

His mother Sylvia Palmer was there, along with local criminal justice reform activists.

Palmer says Liang's negligence after her son was shot is unforgivable.

"He did not call 911 for help, he did not perform CPR, he did nothing at all to try and save Akai's life," Palmer said.

"It's about time the police start taking responsibility for their crime," said one supporter at the rally. "And stop hiding behind, you know, they didn't show me proper. Oh, 'I didn't learn the proper procedure, Oh I don't know how to CPR.'"

Gurley's family says they're confident Liang will be convicted.
