There's a new park in Brooklyn that's built for wheels: it’s part skate park, part bike track. NY1’s Roger Clark gave it a spin.

Skaters and bikers don't always see eye to eye at skate parks, but they are united at Brooklyn Bike Park.

"Typically, the two styles don't get along for the most part. But here, everyone shares the park equally," said Al Henriquez, a local biker.

The park is located along the Williamsburg waterfront on the site of the old Domino Sugar Refinery property, which is becoming a residential and retail complex. Brooklyn Bike Park has a two-year lease for a part of the property that is supposed to become public space. The operators have created what is known as a "pump track," a series of little hills that make peddling unnecessary.

"It's a world-class pump track, there's no other way to put it," said Brooklyn Bike Park volunteer Seth Freedman-Peel.

Most such tracks are dirt, but the one in Brooklyn is paved.

The first of its kind in North America, it was built by a company called Velosolutions, known for its tracks in Europe.

"Now not only bicycles can ride them, now you can ride them with your skateboard, or your scooter, or your in-line skates," said Velosolutions USA CEO Alon Karpman.

The new paved track replaces a dirt one that was across the street. But you can't do this on dirt, which is why skaters are excited.

"This is thinking outside the box, just like skateboarding, so it goes hand in hand," said Michael Cohen of Shut Skateboards.

The park offers two-hour open sessions for bikers and skateboarders, and if you need a lesson in skating – they call it skateboard supercross – you can do that, too.

"I think first we have to just get them standing on the board is probably the main challenge," said Skateboard Supercross instructor Jennay Say Qua. "Once they get that, they usually get super stoked, and they are like, yeah, I want to keep going."

Since I haven't skateboarded since Tony Hawk was a teenager, I tried out a bike–available for rental.

It may not look like it, but it's a great cardiovascular workout. Or maybe I am just old.

It was less of a struggle for 9-year old Jacob Karpman.

"We went to a bike shop and got me a bike, and I really got the hang of it. But it's really fun here," he said.
