Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams got screened Friday as part of Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Over the next few weeks, NY1 is bringing viewers stories that highlight the need for screening and prevention.

Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., but with recommended screening, it can be found early or even prevented.

Adams said it's important for anyone 50 or older to get screened.

"Early detection is really the answer. All professionals agree on this," Adams said. "I know it's an intrusive test sometimes, but modern medicine has made it possible to detect early polyps so that we could address the issue."

This weekend, NY1 launches a new health show, City Health Beat, and our first guest is NY1's own Roma Torre, who will talk about her battle with colon cancer. It debuts Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
