A state lawmaker is highlighting fire safety awareness following this past weekend's fatal fire in Brooklyn.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind is distributing hundreds of smoke detectors donated by Home Depot.

The handout comes following Saturday's fire in Midwood that was caused by a malfunctioning hot plate.

The fire claimed seven of the eight Sassoon children.

Fire officials say they may have survived if there were working smoke detectors on the first or second floors.

"We want to send the message you need this in your house. You have a second floor, a first floor. Hey, it's not expensive. You can go out and buy them and protect your family. It's that simple," Hikind said.

Hikind also said people using hot plates or similar products over the Sabbath need to make sure the cords are safe and the products are in good working order.
